mesothelioma updates
mesothelioma is a harrowing disease, but fortunately
fairly rare. Mesothelioma is typically associated with
previous exposure to asbestos. mesothelioma is caused as a
result of malignant cancerous cells lining the chest or abdominal
region or area surrounding the heart.
mesothelioma can be caused by very small exposure to asbestos.
Usually, mesothelioma doesn't occur until decades after exposure.
Exposure to asbestos and resultant mesothelioma can often be traced
back to old work environments, or even old houses. e.g. asbestos
mills, mines, or shipping yards.
As with so many other health issues, smoking greatly increases
the risk of contracting mesothelioma .

Other pages on this website will go into more detail, but lets
briefly look at mesothelioma symptoms. Unfortunately, earlier
symptoms of mesothelioma can often be mistaken for less serious
illness. So the fact that it's mesothelioma can be initially
overlooked.
What are the most common early symptoms ? Dyspnea, lasting
cough, weight loss, pleuritic pain. But a thorough examination
is required before these symptoms can be attributed to mesothelioma
- ct scan, x-rays, or MRI are required.
Treatment is available, and more and more mesothelioma research
is being done every year. (see right hand side of this page,
and other pages on this site, for latest news about mesothelioma).
Surgery is one option, but the recurrence rate of cancerous cells is
high. So it's important that mesothelioma gets diagnosed an
treated as quickly as possible.
Typically, mesothelioma is more common in men, and usually
develops 30-45 years after initial exposure to asbestos.
Mesothelioma has not been found to be race dependent.
